Why should I separate security systems into different VLANs?

VLAN separation (network segmentation) prevents compromised cameras from accessing access control panels or management systems. If an attacker gains access to the camera network, VLANs block them from reaching other critical systems. This is required by most compliance frameworks.

How much power do my cameras need? Can my switch handle it?

PoE power varies by camera type: HD cameras use 5-10W, 4K cameras use 15-30W, and thermal/PTZ cameras can use 50-95W. You must ensure your PoE switch can deliver the total power budget and support all devices simultaneously. CCTVplanner calculates this automatically.

Do I need a UPS for my security system?

Yes. A UPS keeps cameras, switches, and NVRs running during power outages so monitoring continues. Size the UPS to handle your total device load for at least 4-24 hours depending on your requirements. Calculate total power consumption including all devices simultaneously.
